African Soapstone Hearts, Hand Carved in Kenya

Soapstone, or kisii stone (named for the region where it is found), is a soft, smooth stone. Artisans in Kenya use a wet-sanding technique to carve these sculptures and dye them with natural dyes. Since the sculptures often shows the natural colors of the stone, some color variations should be expected. One can often see shades of cream, gray, and brown peeking through the bold dyes.
